How buying shares works here

The Guyana Stock Exchange (formerly GASCI) trades once a week, normally on a Monday: 38 sessions in 2026 to 21 September, the latest being Session 1191 on 21 September 2026. All orders go through its four member brokers. You open an account with a broker and deposit the money first; the broker places a limit or at-best order at the next session, and the trade settles within five business days. There is no central depository for shares, so your proof of ownership is the share certificate and the entry in the company's register. The regulator is the Guyana Securities Council.

364-day Treasury billAuction G264 of 14 September 2026 (settled 18 September): a single bid of G$100 million at 1.00% was awarded at 1.00%, and G$3,000 million of the G$3,100 million offered was not awarded. The tender notices for issues G263 and G265 each give the previous issue's average discount rate as 0.990%, a compounded yield of 1.000%. The auction of 17 August 2026 paid 1.10%; the Statistical Abstract for July 2026 (Table 4.1) shows a 1.09% discount rate.1.0%G$50,000as of 14 Sep 2026 · bankofguyana.org.gy · checked on the source
91-day Treasury billAuction 780 of 7 September 2026 (settled 11 September): every bid was awarded at a yield of 1.10% and the full G$17,702.4 million offered was taken. The tender notices for issues 780 and 782 each give the previous issue's average discount rate as 1.097%, a compounded yield of 1.100%. 1. 1.Treasury bills are issued for a minimum of G$50,000 and multiples of that, in 91-day, 182-day and 364-day maturities. bankofguyana.org.gy
  2. 2.You bid by sealed tender: one form per bid, in an envelope marked "Tender for Treasury Bills", placed in the tender box at the Bank of Guyana between 8:00 on Monday and 10:00 on Wednesday. Results come out on Thursday and settlement is on Friday. bankofguyana.org.gy
  3. 3.If you would rather not go to the Bank yourself, your commercial bank can process the bid for you together with the Bank of Guyana. bankofguyana.org.gy
  4. 4.Bills carry no coupon. You pay less than the face value and receive the face value at maturity; the discount rate is the face value minus the price, divided by the face value, times 365 over the term in days, times 100. bankofguyana.org.gy
  5. 5.All discount earned on Treasury bills is subject to a 20% withholding tax, and that tax is final: no further income tax is due on it. bankofguyana.org.gy
  6. 6.At the latest auctions the awarded yield was 1.10% on the 91-day bills (7 September 2026) and 1.00% on the 364-day bills (14 September 2026). Commercial banks took 99% of that 91-day issue; only G$100 million of the G$3.1 billion 364-day issue was sold, all of it to other financial institutions; no private bidder was awarded anything. A small bidder should expect about 1% to 1.1% a year before tax, roughly 0.8% to 0.9% after the withholding. bankofguyana.org.gy

Tax notes

  • Gains on shares of public companies listed on the Guyana Stock Exchange carry no capital gains tax and are not counted as income (Capital Gains Tax Act, section 8(2)). Gains on other assets are taxed at 20%, or as income when the asset is held under 12 months. gra.gov.gy
  • Dividends paid by a company resident in Guyana reach a resident individual with no withholding tax and no income tax. gra.gov.gy
  • Interest on savings accounts carries a 20% withholding tax once a person's total interest for the year passes G$10,000 (below that, nothing is withheld), and the discount on Treasury bills always carries 20%. Where the 20% is withheld, it is a final tax. gra.gov.gy
  • Dividends and interest earned outside Guyana are taxable here as they arise, with only partial credit for the foreign tax paid. The United States has no tax treaty with Guyana, so US dividends lose 30% at source and only part of that is creditable. irs.gov
  • Treaties with the United Kingdom (in force since 1992) and Canada (signed 1985) apply to income from those countries. gov.uk
  • Under the CARICOM double taxation agreement, dividends from a company in another member state are taxed only in that state, at zero percent, and interest at no more than 15%. caricom.org
